The state of Bavaria in south Germany is know for mythical dragon slaying knights, fairy tale Castles, pristine alpine lakes, it's Baroque and Roccoco churches a land blessed with lush greenery and breathtaking alpine range.
The food is rustic, wholesome and tasty;basic bread and meat combination with tons and tons of beer . The age old traditions, customs and the robust Bavarian culture makes this a delectable culinary experience. What stood out was the distinct taste of the hard yet flavorful spretzels and dark breads which transform you to a rural setting. The meat is chunky, juicy and plentiful. This medley of textures call for beer as a necessity. Salt is also a locally available resource and the Bavarians do not shy away from it, I was also surprised to find out their love for tartiness in most of their dishes including sauerkrauts (pickled cabbage) which is a common accomplishments. Dry roasting being a common cooking method here, do not expect boiled or bland food in this part of Germany.

Pork and beef are eaten in all forms but the most commonly as sausages. Their are astounding varieties of hams, sausages, salami and cold cuts available in combinations with various herbs and spices. Chicken is hard to trace except in MacDonald's and Burger kings. Viktualienmarket is the most spectacular fresh produce market in the heart of Munich. It's packed all around the year with tourists and food connoisseur around the globe. The shops displays products from highly skilled bread makes and butchers that makes each shop more inviting than the other. The top of the mill spices, fruits & vegetables and wine are the highlights of the market including the beer gardens that are open air beer bistros.Witnessing the classic act of holding 10-12 glasses of beer mugs in both the hands by local waiters is a feet worth a mention.
We got the chance to visit the world famous brewery in Munich called the Hofbrauhaus which dates back to the late 16th century opened by the duke of Bavaria, a litre of the 'brown' ale the original ale of Munich made our day the first day we landed. The lemony Radler reminded me of our locally available Shandy though a far superior version in very sense. Living close to the main train station in Munich a short walk took us to Spatenhaus that we found upbeat and classy, the restaurant dished out rustic Bavarian dishes like pork knuckles in tarty gravy with the signature Wisen beer we longed to have since we got to know about it's German origins.
Thinking of our meat eating and beer drinking days like the true blue Bavarians I can still smell the fresh mustard sauce on my bratwurst
